Frequently Asked Questions

Understanding the mental health industry can be overwhelming and at some times very confusing. Below are some frequently asked questions which will help clarify common misconceptions.

01

What should I expect on my first visit?

During your first visit with us, we'll determine why you are here and what you would like to achieve. We'll come up with a strategy to tackle your concerns and challenges and set short term goals to affect long term changes.

02

Do I need a referral from my GP?

Some practitioners will require a mental health plan from your doctor. At ANSA Counselling you do not need a referral from your GP to see one of our qualified counsellors.

03

Do you have a Medicare rebate?

Unfortunately at this time counsellors are not included in the medicare rebate scheme. However, it is something that the ANSA Team are working towards and will hope to have in the near future.

04

How often do I need to come to therapy?

Each person is different and will have different needs when it comes to counselling. This is something we discuss with you during your first consultation and will come to an arrangement we think suits you and that you're happy with. Frequency may vary during your time with us but our clients will see us anywhere from once a week to once a month. In rare cases we my recommend you see us more than once a week but again, we will talk to you about this first.

05

What sorts of topics or experiences are suitable for counselling?

Everything. Throughout life we will have and carry with us many and various experiences. We will come up against topics that challenge us as individuals and question who we are. There are times when these experiences and topics will leave a mark on us that is beyond our ability to understand.  At ANSA Counselling, we help you identify these moments and work through the challenges that they present in your life.

06

What is Equine Assisted Therapy?

Equine Assisted Therapy (EAP) is a non invasive and gentle therapy that uses horses to bring about awareness. Our horses are part of our team and they interact differently with each person that enters the paddock. It is a metaphoric learning which also provides a space for us to play out life experiences without the fear of judgment.

07

What is it about horses that makes this therapy effective?

Horses do not care what label has been placed upon a person, they care about the moment. For this reason horses are highly effective. They are excellent at reading situations and often know us better than we know ourselves. We are taught to act certain ways as we grow older but horses react to what’s beneath the exterior and therefore see what is happening in the moment.

08

But I don't know how to ride a horse...

There is no horse riding in sessions. EAP is about building relationships and freedom. We do not put any pressure on our horses to interact with a client in a session and because of this, it allows the horse to be who it is which is what we ask of our clients. Absolutely no horse experience is needed to engage in this therapy.
